Start with the experience you want

Photography, family travel, wildlife viewing and privacy can lead to different proposals. Define your priorities, approximate budget and tolerance for internal flights or long drives before comparing regions and dates. Do not choose solely from a lodge photograph: ask about activities, its setting and the time available to enjoy them. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.

Compare the lodge as part of the itinerary

Request details of included activities, number of outings, schedules, vehicle type and private options. Check meals, drinks, facilities and age restrictions. Families should confirm rules for their travellers’ actual ages. Similar-looking properties may include very different experiences; compare services and conditions as well as the room.

Calculate connections and baggage

Identify your arrival airport or meeting point, transfer to the lodge and connection time between stages. For internal flights, request the actual operator’s baggage conditions and plan for items you cannot take. Avoid a tight connection between an activity and an international flight. Allowing a buffer is more useful than a schedule that works only when everything is exactly on time.
